the double cleanse
the bottom line
Double cleansing is exactly what it appears to be – cleansing the face twice. But given the challenges (for some of us) of completing even a single cleanse, why would anyone opt to do it twice, during the same routine? Double cleansing effectively removes makeup and excess sebum, deep cleans, allows for improved absorption of products, hydrates, decreases breakouts, and gets you one step closer to glowing skin. Still not convinced? Keep reading.
first layer: what is double cleansing and who should do it?
Like many other genius beauty hacks, double cleansing has its origins in Korean beauty rituals. During a double-cleanse, you wash your face first with an oil-based cleanser to remove sebum, makeup, and sunscreen, and second, with a water-based cleanser to wash away sweat and dirt.
Not everyone needs to double cleanse. If you have oily skin or wear makeup daily, a nightly double cleanse can be the key to effectively removing all remains of the day. If your skin is balanced and you wear little to no makeup, a gentle cleanse alone may be sufficient.
second layer: why to double cleanse
We love double cleansing as it truly sets the stage for more effective absorption of your next layer of products. Here are some key reasons to incorporate double cleansing into your skincare régime:
- dissolves makeup: because makeup is lipophilic*, it’s best removed with an oil-based cleanser which acts as a magnet for heavy foundation and eye makeup.
- effective for oily and acne-prone skin: like makeup, sebum is lipophilic and is more readily lifted with oil-based cleansers which match its consistency. If you live in a region with poor air quality and pollution and notice whiteheads and comedones*, double cleansing can be very beneficial.
- provides a deeper cleanse: clean skin is the first step towards achieving healthy skin. In addition to remove surface makeup, sebum, and sweat, double cleansing deep cleans pores to remove both superficial and deep impurities from the skin.
- improved absorption of active ingredients: when the skin is truly clean, active ingredients are absorbed more easily, which in turn makes the rest of your skincare routine more effective.
While we think that almost everyone can benefit from double cleansing, you ultimately need to determine the best regimen for your specific skincare needs.
third layer: how to double cleanse
Double cleansing uses two different types of cleansers. The first wash uses an oil-based cleanser such as a cleansing oil or an anhydrous balm which can break down makeup, excess oil, and sebum. This step can be especially soothing during the dry winter season, as it cleanses without stripping your face of natural oils.
The second wash adds in a gentle water-based creamy cleanser, gel, foam, or micellar water which hydrates and soothes the skin while sweeping away everything lifted during the first cleanse. Make sure this cleanse is mild – avoid exfoliating acids and peroxide.
Some truly dedicated cleansing types will add in a third wash with an exfoliating cleanser. If you opt for this, make sure that your skin doesn’t feel tight, dry, or irritated afterwards. Learn to listen to your skin and don’t forget to moisturize immediately after cleansing and toning.
If you wear heavy makeup or live in a polluted environment (hello, New York City), you’ll benefit from double cleansing every evening. Follow up with a soothing wash in the morning to refresh your skin. If your skin is sensitive, consider double cleansing only when you’re wearing extra makeup, or not at all. While double cleansing is not universally advocated for those with dry skin, we’ve found it can be especially soothing and hydrating for these skin types. Again, if you notice irritation or redness, reduce the frequency of your double cleanse and ensure that the second cleanse is not stripping your skin.
fourth layer: how we do it
We like to begin our double cleanse with a few drops of our rice bran & pomegranate facial cleansing oil. Shake a few drops onto your fingertips and massage into dry or damp skin. Add a bit of water if desired to let it glide more evenly across your face. Follow immediately with a few pumps of our cream-based oatmeal cleansing milk or rice & hinoki facial cleanser. Massage over skin for one minute and rinse off with lukewarm water. Follow with your usual toning and moisturizing routine. For a rich double cleanse, replace the oil cleanser with our rosehip replenishing balm. Warm a pea-sized amount on your fingertips and massage into skin prior to following with your cream cleanser. Your outer glow awaits.

definitions:
comedones: a dilated hair follicle filled with keratin, bacteria, and sebum, but free of inflammation. closed comedones are termed "whiteheads", while open comedones are called "blackheads".
lipophilic: technically, “fat loving”. this lovely term also indicates that an ingredient is oil-soluble.
